Why is WHO so criticized during COVID19?

In the world of crooked data, fake news, and information pollution, which circulating through different media across the globe the significance of the origin or source of the information is very crucial. While considering the healthcare sector – the government or authorities, media, and health experts recognize the World Health Organization (WHO) as the authorization of official information. The United Nations annexed body WHO has done an exceptional role in this domain and the policies that are achieved by WHO, has made a great influence on the public healthcare sector. However, in 2020 due to the extremely contagious COVID19, the WHO is facing a large criticism for its announcements and activities. The organization has been criticized by US President Donald Trump, simultaneously several other national leaders of different countries where COVID19 is deeply hurting censured the WHO for their inaccurate data and report on the spread of the virus and China supported remarks. Even though WHO head Tedros Adhanom tried to defend his side by blaming the activities of representative governments.

The WHO was established in 1948 as an agency of the United Nations, as a department for international healthcare. Even though it was formed after World War II, the demand for global public healthcare organizations appeared a long time ago when colonization was at its peak. The trade within Europe accompanied by migration and trade routes to Asia got busier and in the meantime, different diseases that are unfamiliar to different parts of the world start spreading. Public healthcare emerged as a huge concern for the governments in the west when they were plagued with unconventional diseases brought from the east. The need to share knowledge and ensure global participation to eradicate diseases became unavoidable. International Sanitary Conferences, started in 1851 organized by the French Government to standardize international quarantine regulations against the spread of Cholera, Plague, and Yellow Fever, were considered forerunners of the WHO. With contributions from 194 states cooperation WHO was appreciable to eradicate viruses like Smallpox from the planet, campaigns for vaccination, and HIV/AIDS awareness and research have made a huge impact across the globe. Yet things are getting unfavorable for the WHO in the 2020s when the world became more extensive and rising nationalist campaigns.

In the 21st century, human beings have been through 3 pandemics, in the year of 2003, 2014, and 2020 human race hooked by deadly viruses. When the Novel SARS struck the world in 2003, WHO. was directed by Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Norwegian Prime Minister – under her administration WHO expertly contained the SARS virus without many casualties. During this time WHO’s arrangements to hold timely press conferences and instructions on the travel ban, quarantine, social distancing helped the spread of viruses and casualties. In the later years, it was apparent that the WHO lost its institutional confidence. As the Ebola outbreak occurred in 2014 from Liberia and Nigeria, it was failed to provide advice in the early stage and they were investigating the reasons of the outbreak, this adversely affected the declaration of public emergencies and delayed calling for aid. When it enters 2020, the criticism facing by the organization is uncomparable with its incidents, incorrect information passed by Director-General Tedros like he stated there is no such evidence to the virus (COVID19) pass between humans on January 8, 2020, and WHO can’t send a team to Wuhan in the early hours where a “pneumonia” was confirmed on 31st December 2019, clearly defines the carelessness of WHO over COVID19 outbreak. The inclarity in the use of masks to prevent the spread of the virus, the delay in declaring COVID19 as a pandemic, and the China-centric appraisal are aroused by the disputant towards WHOs operation during the COVID19.

While 2020 is considered the US election year, some people say it’s part of the US election campaign to attack the WHO and cut down the aidings for the WHO. The announcement made by Donald Trump on April 14 became a headline in the global newspaper, the budget forecasted by the WHO on 2020-21 was for the 48 billion, cutdown of US share will lead them to big trouble even though china offered more money as it does not compromise contribution of US share. The experts point out this will affect voluntary contribution too, which will be a whopping share of 75% of WHOs budget. Opposers point out that it will affect the pandemic termination projects, while the world expects more major public healthcare plans from the WHO and leaders Shinzo Abe and Scott Morrison already announced their support for WHO and its operations and its efforts to tear away the pandemic.
